Over US$200 billion invested annually in leisure & hospitality construction

  • Published:Monday, February 05, 2018

The leisure and hospitality segment has been one of the fastest growing construction segments since 2012, supported by growing tourism, and total construction output exceeded US$200bn in 2017. Further strong growth is predicted through to 2021.

The markets expected to witness the greatest growth in terms of construction output value are Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Africa. Within these, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the UAE and Qatar are all expected to grow at above 7% per year, with huge developments planned or in progress.

As of Q4 2017, the Construction Intelligence Center’s (CIC) Projects Database was tracking a total of US$2.7 trillion-worth of leisure and hospitality-related projects globally, from announcement to execution. Included within this are hotels, resorts, motels, restaurants, theatres, cinemas, casinos, athletics tracks and clubs and exhibition facilities, often with other commercial or residential construction included. Excluded from this are stadia, which have been the subject of a previous report. The projects include both pure leisure projects and mixed-use projects.
